Frequently Asked Questions

What is an element?
An element is a unit of natural biodiversity : a species, natural community or animal assemblage.

What is the precision level of cartographic data?
Three precisions levels are associated with the element occurrences presented in the Centre de données sur le patrimoine naturel du Québec (CDPNQ) information system, based on observation siting quality:

  • precision level “S” (to-the-second precision). Its map siting is accurate to +/- 150 m;
  • precision level “M” (to-the-minute precision). Its map siting is accurate to +/- 1.5 km;
  • precision level “G” (general precision). Its map siting is accurate to +/- 8 km.

The precision level indicates the area in which the element occurrence in question is theoretically likely to be found. For instance, at precision level “M”, the occurrence could be found anywhere within a radius of 1.5 km.

How often is data updated?
The Centre de données sur le patrimoine naturel du Québec (CDPNQ) information system is constantly evolving. New data is added each week and existing data corrected or completed as we gather new knowledge.
